What Reiki Healing Is

Reiki is generally thought of as a Japanese form of hands-on-healing developed by Mikao Usui of Japan that was brought to the United States and westernized in  the 1930’s. It works with the human energy field and is a bit more involved than hands-on-healing however, as there are a number of additional teachings and techniques that do not involve actual touch. Reiki is a popular form of "energy healing" or "alternative healing" used by people all over the world, and in numerous hospitals and clinic settings with a great deal of success. The term Reiki has been translated from Japanese in several ways. Two of these are “spiritual energy” and “universal life force energy.” Physics would tell us that we, and all things are made up of of universal energy. The word spiritual does not in any way indicate that Reiki is a religion. Although Reiki was founded by a Buddhist who studied many spiritual and healing disciplines, it is not a Buddhist religious practice, but rather a healing form and practice that works very well with the human energy field as well as with the energy fields of our pets.

Physics and other sciences have documented the human energy field very well in a number of different ways including the EKG and the EEG, which measure heart and brain energy activity. Many people have also heard of, or experienced diagnostics tools such as the MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Reiki practitioners are working with the frequencies of the human energy field in a manner that promotes balance. There are many other forms of energy healing as well, some of those are Acupressure, Healing Touch, Cranial-sacral work, Polarity Therapy, and some of the instruments used at physician's and chiropractor's offices.

Among it's benefits, Reiki is a very effective means of relaxation therapy that supports the body’s own inner healer by using light gentle touch and other advanced techniques within a person’s energy system either on the fully clothed body or above it within their energy field. Western Reiki practitioners do not not diagnose illnesses, nor do they provide "medical treatment". The Reiki practitioner serves as a conduit or vessel through which the spiritually guided energy flows and goes where it is needed in order to help the client's system come into a place of increased balance and healing. Simply put, people are much more likely to be healthy when in balance and to inadvertently invite discomfort and illness when they are not. Reiki can help with that balance through its work with the person's energy system. In no way do I wish to imply that only people with known health problems can benefit from Reiki. Reiki can prevent health problems and is wonderful for people who simply wish to treat themselves to a very pleasant and relaxing experience. Reiki is helpful in both physical and psychological areas.

Reiki treatment sessions are normally carried out with the client lying fully clothed on a massage table or seated in a chair. Many western practitioners follow a set protocol of hand positions to channel Reiki energy while others rely upon older techniques using intuitive placements. You are not touched in any places that would be uncomfortable. Reiki treatments normally last from 60-90 minutes although they can be shorter or longer depending upon the needs and wishes of the client. Some practitioners recommend a series of treatments however, many of us  believe that it is most helpful to individualize a person's treatment.

Many people are familiar with the word “chi” that is used in acupuncture and the martial arts. The Japanese word “ki” of Reiki is similar to “chi” but not quite the same. We are healthy when our Ki is flowing the way that it is meant to through our meridians, chakras, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Yet, blockages or imbalances in our Ki can have a negative effect in many ways. Imagine what would happen if the flow of life force energy through your system were blocked or stagnant. You might begin to feel out of balance, stressed out, over tired and weak. You might feel physical, emotional, mental or spiritual discomfit and symptoms. Stress in and of itself increases the chance of illness and blockages of ki. Blockages can decrease the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to parts of the body, yet learning to work with ki can increase that delivery. Many illnesses show up first in what is referred to as the subtle bodies, the energy that surrounds a person’s physical being.  This energy makes up what is commonly referred to as the aura or subtle energy bodies, something that people were once quite skeptical about but which has been demonstrated scientifically numerous times. A person’s physical body is usually the last to respond to conditions that cause illness or discomfort. Reiki not only works with the physical body, it also works with the subtle energy bodies in order to promote healing and to prevent disease in the first place. We are all faced with things that affect our Ki daily in the modern world. We have known for years that even those life events we experience to be positive may have stress associated with them. Reiki works to increase balance, helping us to create a harmonious sense of wellness. People have found Reiki to be helpful with any number of situations including but not limited to: stress and need for relaxation, increasing creative flow, preparation for or recovery from surgery, chronic pain, emotional issues, addictive behaviors, and a whole host of other issues. In western culture, Reiki does not usually take the place of medical treatment and I would certainly encourage you to follow through with such care if needed. Reiki can be quite complimentary and work harmoniously with it. Both founder Mikao Usui and Chujiro Hayashi taught Reiki as being helpful with a number of conditions. Reiki has a different focus than most forms of western medicine in that it focuses on the whole person rather than on specific symptom reduction. Reiki techniques and practices can also be helpful in developing and maintaining healthy home and organizational settings.

You may have heard of distant healing or remote healing. The field of Quantum Physics has shown us that energy can go anywhere with positive intent. Many people live in remote areas and have reduced access to certain types of care. This is not the case with Reiki. Reiki has specific and effective techniques for distant healing which can be sent to people around the world, across the room, or to situations that people are facing. Distant healing is normally taught in the second level of Reiki training. Distance Reiki works well with people and also with pets who may have concerns about touch or personal space. In that case, the practitioner would probably not start with light touch but work from a distance until such time as the person or pet were more comfortable. Megan is a young greyhound whom I adopted (or perhaps it was the other way around) for whom distance Reiki and some other healing techniques worked quite well to overcome the trauma she had suffered in her previous home. She is now a very happy member of the Reiki North Idaho family. There is a picture of Megan and her sister Komyo on the "about your host" page.

What does Reiki feel like? That largely depends upon you. Some have mentioned feeling as if they were held in a comfortable, gentle, peaceful sense of warmth and serenity. Does it work? Yes, and Reiki always works for the client’s highest good, whatever that might be. Each client experiences that benefit in their own individual way. Reiki can do no harm.

There are three general levels of Reiki training in the western world. These are Reiki I, or Shoden in which sensing Ki and working with Ki for self-healing or to work with friends and family is taught.. Reiki II is known as Okuden and broadens one’s knowledge of Reiki, Reiki symbols and techniques including distant healing. Many people advance to this level simply due to a wish to broaden their knowledge and practice, while others do so in order to incorporate Reiki into other healing modalities with which they work such as western medicine or massage, or to work as professional Reiki practitioners.  Reiki III, is known as the Master Teacher level, or Shinpiden. People who study to this level have normally made a commitment to an even deeper lifelong study of Reiki and to pass on the knowledge of Reiki to others. Can anyone learn Reiki? Certainly, and as in any endeavor, consistent practice improves one’s abilities.

As discussed above, Reiki can have many benefits for self and for the benefit of others. There are Reiki practitioners all over the world. There is also a great deal of information available at local bookstores and on the web.  You might like to take a look and see if there is something about exploring Reiki that appeals to you. If I can be helpful in any way, please feel free to contact me.
